5 Things to Look for in an LCSW Supervisor in Texas

5 Things to Look for in an LCSW Supervisor in Texas
Choosing a supervisor isn't just an administrative box to check on your way to licensure. The right LCSW-S shapes how you think about cases, how you carry yourself in the therapy room, and how you build a sustainable clinical career. Here are five things to weigh. 1) Approach and style. Some supervisors hold the meeting tightly, others leave more space for you to drive. Ask up front: what does a typical supervision hour look like? Will I bring cases? How directive will you be? A mismatch in style isn't a deal-breaker, but you should know what you're signing up for. 2) Ethics and risk fluency. Texas social work has its own regulatory texture. You want a supervisor who can walk you through risk assessment, documentation, and the gray areas of practice without flinching. Ask how they handle high-acuity cases and clinical decisions that don't have a tidy answer. 3) Clinical breadth — and humility. Has your supervisor worked in private practice, agency, schools, hospitals? Breadth is helpful, but humility is essential: the best supervisors know what they don't know and refer or consult openly. Avoid anyone who has the answer to everything. 4) Career path support. Are you headed toward private practice, agency leadership, or specialty work? Your supervisor should help you think about that arc — not just rack up hours. Documentation flow, billing exposure, and business considerations belong in supervision when private practice is on the horizon. 5) Fit. Most underrated of all. You'll be sharing your most vulnerable clinical moments with this person — early sessions where you weren't sure what to say, hard calls that kept you up. If you don't feel safe enough to bring your real questions, even the best technical supervision won't grow you. Always start with a consultation, and trust your gut about fit.
